The flower spikes have a velvety texture and appear on long, elegant stems, resembling small kangaroo paws—hence its common name.
With compact growth and high heat tolerance, it’s an excellent choice for Mediterranean gardens, beds, borders, pots and planters. Its long flowering period, from late winter to early autumn, brings colour and ornamental interest for many months. The flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, supporting garden biodiversity.
As well as its outdoor ornamental value, the flower stems are highly prized for floral arrangements and indoor décor, as they last very well when cut and placed in a vase.

Scientific name: Anigozanthos spp.
Common names: Kangaroo Paw, Anigozanto
Family: Haemodoraceae
Origin: South-west Australia
Climate: Mediterranean, Subtropical and Mild temperate
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 70cm
Pot diameter: 17 cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers locations with direct sun exposure. The more sun it gets, the more abundant and longer-lasting the flowering will be.
Watering: Moderate to low. Once established, it tolerates dry spells, though it benefits from regular watering during the hottest months and while flowering. Avoid waterlogging. In a pot/planter, watch out for saucers or pots without drainage holes, where irrigation or rainwater can collect and cause root rot.
Temperature: Adapts very well to heat and the Mediterranean climate. It tolerates light cold and occasional short frosts, but should be protected from intense, prolonged frost.
Fertilising: Apply outdoor plant fertiliser in spring and summer to encourage growth and flower production.
Pruning: Regularly remove dried flower stems and older leaves to encourage new blooms and keep the plant looking more compact and healthy.
Soil: Prefers light, sandy or well-draining soils/substrates, slightly acidic to neutral. It doesn’t tolerate heavy or permanently wet soils.
Pet Friendly: There are no references to significant toxicity for dogs and cats, and it’s generally considered a safe plant.

Fun fact: Anigozanthos flowers have a very distinctive velvety texture, due to tiny hairs that cover the petals. In the Australian wild, they’re often pollinated by nectar-feeding birds, which feed on the nectar produced by the flowers and help them reproduce.

WARNING!
