Considered one of the most aromatic and cold-hardy lavenders, it stands out for its versatility and ease of cultivation, adapting very well to the Portuguese climate.
In favourable conditions, it can reach between 30 and 80 cm in height, forming compact and harmonious small shrubs. Between June and August, it produces abundant flowers in lilac to purple tones, gathered in elegant flower spikes that rise above the foliage. These nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, actively contributing to garden biodiversity.
Resistant to drought, heat and poor soils, it’s an excellent choice for beds, borders, Mediterranean gardens, low-maintenance gardens, pots and planters. Beyond its ornamental value, it’s also widely appreciated for the intense and relaxing aroma of its flowers, traditionally used in perfumery, aromatherapy and decoration.
Lavender is a timeless plant that combines beauty, fragrance and hardiness, being an indispensable presence in any sunny outdoor space.

Scientific name: Lavandula angustifolia
Common names: Lavender, English Lavender
Família: Lamiaceae
Origin: Southern Europe (Mediterranean mountain regions)
Climate: Mediterranean (hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters)
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 30-40cm
Diâmetro vaso: 19cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Needs full sun to flower abundantly. Shade significantly reduces flowering and can weaken the plant.
Temperature: Very resistant to cold and moderate frosts. Thrives best in locations with hot, dry summers and cool winters.
Watering: Very drought-tolerant: water only when the soil is dry. Avoid waterlogging, which causes root rot.
Humidity: Prefers dry to moderately moist soils, as long as they’re well-drained. Overly humid environments encourage fungal diseases.
Fertilisation: Not demanding – generally doesn’t require fertilisation in good, well-drained soils. If you want to encourage flowering, you can apply a balanced, phosphorus-rich fertiliser in spring.
Pruning: After flowering, remove dried flower stems and lightly shorten new shoots to maintain a compact shape. Avoid severe pruning on old wood without foliage, as recovery can be difficult.
Life cycle: Perennial. It stays alive for several years in favourable conditions, keeping its characteristic foliage, flowers and scent.
Soil: Prefers light, well-drained substrates with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH; adapts well to poor and even stony soils.
Pet Friendly: Generally considered safe for dogs and cats. However, ingestion of large quantities of leaves, flowers or essential oil may cause gastrointestinal discomfort in more sensitive animals.

Fun fact: Famous for its essential oil (rich in linalool and linalyl acetate), widely used in perfumery, aromatherapy, soap-making and cosmetics. The dried flowers are used in potpourris and to repel insects. The plant is also melliferous and valued in beekeeping.

WARNING!
