Tecomaria capensis<\/em>, known in Portugal as Tecom\u00e1ria, Tecoma-do-Cabo or Cape Honeysuckle, is a vigorous shrub of South African origin, highly valued for its abundant bright orange blooms that brighten gardens and patios for much of the year.
Fast-growing with a naturally branching habit, it can be grown as a shrub, informal hedge or even as a light climber when supported on suitable structures. Its glossy green foliage contrasts magnificently with the orange tubular flowers, which are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.
It’s an extremely versatile plant, resistant to heat, drought once established and coastal conditions, adapting very well to Portugal’s climate. Can be used in Mediterranean gardens, beds, slopes, fences, walls, large pots and planters.
Flowering tends to intensify during spring, summer and autumn, and can extend throughout much of the year in milder climate regions.<\/p>\n

CUIDADOS<\/strong>
Light<\/strong>: Prefers full sun locations for more abundant flowering, although it tolerates partial shade.
Temperature<\/strong>: Adapts well to the Portuguese climate. Tolerates intense heat and some cold exposure, although severe and prolonged frosts may damage the foliage.
Watering<\/strong>: Moderate. During the first months after planting it should be watered regularly. Once established it shows good drought resistance.
Humidity<\/strong>: Not demanding regarding atmospheric humidity.
Fertilization<\/strong>: Apply fertilizer for outdoor flowering plants in spring and summer to stimulate growth and flowering.
Pruning<\/strong>: Tolerates pruning very well. Can be pruned after the main flowering periods to control size, encourage branching and maintain a compact shape.

Fun fact<\/strong>: Although frequently used as a shrub, Tecomaria<\/em> can easily reach 2 to 4 metres in height and width when grown directly in the ground under favorable conditions. Its tubular flowers are especially appreciated by pollinators and, in its native regions, also by nectar-feeding birds.<\/p>\n
