Its compact habit, delicate foliage and tiny flowers make it perfect for beds, borders, planters and pots. Heat-resistant and with low water requirements once established, it’s also an excellent choice for Mediterranean gardens, rock gardens and other sustainable outdoor spaces, where you want to reduce water consumption without sacrificing colour and flowering.
Its flowers appear abundantly for much of the year, in shades of purple, lilac, pink or white. During flowering, Cuphea looks like an authentic country bouquet, forming delicate clusters of flowers that create a light, natural and extremely elegant ornamental effect. Low-maintenance, it’s an excellent choice if you want a flowering garden for several months without much effort. The prolonged flowering attracts various pollinating insects, such as bees and butterflies, helping to increase garden biodiversity.
It’s an easy-to-grow plant, heat-resistant and well adapted to the Portuguese climate. It thrives best in sunny or bright partial shade locations and appreciates moderate watering, rewarding you with virtually uninterrupted flowering from spring to late autumn.

Scientific name: Cuphea hyssopifolia
Common names: Mexican Heather, False Heather, Hawaiian Heather
Family: Lythraceae
Origin: Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras
Climate: Tropical, subtropical and mild temperate
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 20-25cm
Pot diameter: 12cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers direct sun or bright partial shade. The greater the sun exposure, the more abundant and prolonged the flowering will be.
Temperature: Thrives best between 18 and 30 °C. Tolerates heat well, but is sensitive to frost and temperatures below 0 °C. In colder regions it may lose part of its foliage during winter.
Watering: Moderate. Water whenever the top layer of substrate is dry, avoiding waterlogging. Once established it shows good drought resistance. During winter, when grown in the ground, rainfall is usually sufficient. If grown in a pot or planter, avoid leaving water accumulated in saucers or containers without drainage, as excess moisture can cause root rot.
Humidity: Adapts well to the normal ambient humidity of the Portuguese climate. Prefers moderately moist but always well-drained soils.
Fertilization: Apply flowering plant fertilizer during spring and summer, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Regular fertilization promotes more abundant and prolonged flowering.
Pruning: A light pruning is recommended in late winter or after the main flowering periods to maintain compact habit, stimulate new growth and encourage continuous flowering. Removing dead flowers helps to prolong the flowering period.
Soil: Fertile, light substrate, rich in organic matter and with good drainage. Tolerates slightly acidic, neutral or slightly alkaline soils.
Life cycle: Perennial plant.
Pet Friendly: There is no evidence of toxicity to dogs and cats. However, it’s recommended to avoid ingestion of any ornamental plant.

Fun fact: Thanks to its compact growth and virtually continuous flowering, Cuphea hyssopifolia is one of the most widely used plants in Mediterranean gardens, borders and urban spaces. Its tiny flowers are also an important source of nectar for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.

WARNING!
