Description:
<\/span><\/b>Eggplant is an annual plant (or perennial in mild climates), with
\na shrubby habit that typically reaches between 30 cm and 1 m in height. It has
\nlarge, alternate leaves with wavy margins. The flowers are usually
\npurple, pink or whitish, with yellow stamens. The fruits, which are the
\nedible part, have smooth, glossy skin, usually dark purple,
\nbut they can also be white, yellow or striped, depending on the variety. .
\nThe flesh is spongy, light-coloured, with a slightly bitter flavour and
\nyellowish seeds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Care:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Light:<\/span><\/b> Requires intense light, ideally full sun. This is one of the
\nkey factors for good plant development and fruit quality.
Temperature:<\/b> Growth, flowering and fruiting occur best between
\n20\u00b0C and 30\u00b0C during the day and between 20\u00b0C and 27\u00b0C at night. Temperatures below
\n14\u00b0C hinder development; above 32\u00b0C they speed up
\nripening, but prolonged values above 35\u00b0C reduce the quality
\nof the fruits.
Watering:<\/b> Keep the soil well moist, especially during flowering and
\nfruit development.
Humidity:<\/b> Prefers high relative humidity (around 80%), but adapts
\nto varied conditions as long as the soil has good drainage.
Fertilisation:<\/b> Nutrient-demanding, especially potassium during
\nfruiting. Soils with good organic matter and a balanced fertiliser help
\ngrowth.
Pruning:<\/b> In commercial growing or larger plants, side shoots can be pruned
\nand leaves thinned for better ventilation and higher productivity.
Life cycle:<\/b> Grown as an annual in cold climates; it can become
\nperennial in warm regions, with pruning at the end of winter.
Substrate type:<\/b> Prefers medium, deep, well-drained soils, with a slightly
\nacidic pH (between 5.5 and 6.5).
Not Pet Friendly:<\/b> The leaves and flowers contain solanine, a toxic
\nalkaloid. Only ripe fruits are edible, and even then in moderation.
Fun fact:<\/b> It belongs to the same family as tomato, pepper and potato. In addition,
\neggplant is credited with a range of nutritional and medicinal properties:
\nlow calorie (around 25 kcal per 100 g), vitamins (A, B, C),
\nfibre and antioxidants. It is traditionally used to lower cholesterol and
\nhelp with digestion and inflammation.<\/span><\/p>\n
