The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy returns to Cascais with a clear mission: to unite the passion for sailing with the cause of preserving the oceans. The fifth edition will take place between the 5th and 7th of July 2024 and promises to transform the town’s bay into an exciting scene of competition and environmental awareness, which the Horto do Campo Grande could not fail to join.

The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy is a recognised sailing competition where this year 170 boats will challenge each other on Atlantic waters. The sailing event boasts an impressive list of entries in seven classes (NHC, ORC, SNIPE, SB20, FINN, J70 and OPTIMIST), from more than ten nations such as the United States, Great Britain, Switzerland, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland and Hong Kong, making it the largest regatta in Portugal in terms of number of sailors.

Organised in partnership with the Cascais Naval Club, the regatta is not only a sporting spectacle, but also a powerful call to action for the protection of our marine ecosystems. Under the motto ‘The future is in our hands’, the event promises a weekend full of adrenaline, camaraderie and commitment to sustainability, the conservation of marine life and the protection of the oceans.

The event will culminate in an awards ceremony, where the winners will be honoured and the coveted trophy will be presented, a work of art created by the artist Jorge Lé Moura and produced with gold and silver by the jewellers Leitão Irmão.

Cascais: The Perfect Setting for Sailing

Cascais is a destination known for its ideal sailing conditions, thanks to the constant, moderate winds resulting from the meeting of the high pressure of the Azores and the low pressure of the Iberian Peninsula. Cascais, located 30 kilometres west of Lisbon, offers stunning scenery between the Sintra Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, with an intense and permanent relationship with the sea.

A commitment to sustainability

The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy is committed to sustainability. In this sense, the regatta does not use disposable plastic, which minimises the event’s environmental footprint, and the teams’ entry fees will be donated to marine conservation programmes, reinforcing the importance of protecting our fragile ocean habitats. For the fourth time, the prestigious Mirpuri Foundation Ocean Award will be presented to recognise excellence in the scientific community and reward a project designed to positively impact the health of the oceans. The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy was again recognised this year by UNESCO as an official event of the Decade of the Oceans, in honour of its efforts towards sustainability.

Horto do Campo Grande has once again joined this cause, promoting a greener environment in the different areas of the event. Plants stand out for their scientifically proven functions for human well-being, but also for their contribution to balancing the earth’s temperature, reducing environmental pollution and even purifying the air.
