Volcanic Gravel is a mineral component of volcanic origin, widely used in substrate mixes for bonsai and specialty plants. With a calibrated grain size of 3 to 6 mm, it stands out for its high drainage capacity, structural stability, and excellent root aeration.
Chemically neutral, it doesn’t alter the substrate’s pH, unlike many limestone-based materials. Its low water and nutrient retention makes it an ideal addition to mixes requiring better drainage and root oxygenation.
The irregular grain structure promotes root branching and the development of fine roots, essential for bonsai health and vigour. Additionally, its low specific weight improves drainage without excessively increasing the weight of the pots.
It can be used as a substrate component or applied to the bottom of pots to facilitate water runoff and prevent waterlogging.

Use
It can be used in different proportions when formulating substrates, alongside Akadama, Kanuma, pumice, Coco Peat, or other components, to increase drainage and improve the mix’s structure.
It’s also frequently applied as a drainage layer at the bottom of pots, helping to prevent excessive water accumulation around the roots.
Why choose Volcanic Gravel?
Drainage is one of the most important factors for success in bonsai cultivation. Volcanic Gravel provides a stable and highly draining structure, contributing to a healthy root system and more efficient watering management, especially for species sensitive to excess moisture.
