Scientific name: Schlumbergera
Family: Cactaceae
Origin: Tropical forests of Brazil, where it grows on trees and rocks
Climate: Prefers tropical and subtropical climates with high humidity
The Schlumbergera is an epiphytic succulent plant. Unlike traditional cacti, this species has no thorns and adapts better to humid, shady environments.
It has segmented, flattened and fleshy stems, which act as leaves and are green and shiny. The segments have slightly jagged or rounded edges, depending on the species. As it grows, it can form a hanging plant, making it ideal for hanging pots. Its exuberant flowering usually occurs in autumn and winter, with tubular, symmetrical flowers that can be red, pink, white, orange or yellow. It’s a hardy plant, easy to care for and very popular in interior decoration due to its ability to bloom during periods of shorter days and mild temperatures.
Light: Needs indirect light and does not tolerate direct sunlight.
Temperature: Ideal temperature between 15°C and 25°C.
Watering: Water when the substrate is dry on the surface, about once a week in summer and less in winter, as it does not tolerate waterlogging.
Fertilisation: Apply liquid fertiliser every 15 days in spring and summer. In autumn and winter, reduce the frequency to encourage flowering.
Pet Friendly: The Schlumbergera is not toxic to dogs and cats.
