Plants are a great way to bring spaces to life, creating a sense of calm and wellbeing. But if you’re just starting out in gardening, or don’t have time to dedicate to plants, it’s best to choose species that don’t require much maintenance.
Sansevierias belong to the Asparagaceae family and are well known for their long, flat, fleshy leaves. With different shades of green—and some with touches of yellow—they’re widely used in interior décor. They fit into both classic and modern settings, are hardy and easy to care for, and therefore ideal for anyone starting out or who can’t spare much time for plant care. Their air-purifying qualities make them a great choice for bedrooms or spaces with little ventilation.
With this type of plant, it’s best to water moderately. The best way to check if the plant needs water is to do the “finger test”: insert your finger about 3 cm into the soil and only water if it feels dry. It’s important to keep in mind that, although Sansevieria is a hardy plant, it’s advisable to use a well-draining, nutrient-rich substrate so the plant stays healthy. Sansevieria grows best at temperatures between 15–25°C, but it can handle both lower temperatures down to 10°C and higher ones up to 30°C.
To ensure plants grow healthily, it’s important to gently and regularly wipe dust off the leaves with a damp cloth. This will help them absorb more light, which supports their ability to feed and nourish themselves through photosynthesis.
Like Sansevieria, there are other easy-care plants such as Zamioculca, Scindapsus or Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily).
