Common Name: Chinese Ulm (also Chinese Zelcova)
Scientific Name: Ulmus Parvifolia
Characterisation: Originally from China, Korea and Japan, it belongs to the Ulmaceae family.
Also known as the Chinese Zelcova, it is a small-leaved, semi-deciduous or deciduous tree that is highly prized in Bonsai for its fine branching, bark (it creates “scales” with age) and easy shaping.
Location: Ideally it likes to live outdoors (where it can behave like a deciduous tree in harsher winters), but if grown indoors well exposed to light and sun without air conditioning, it lives in good conditions in both locations, it is essential to get 2-3 hours of direct sunlight a day, and if indoors it should always be near a window without curtains or blinds.
Rega: O consumo de água depende muito do estado vegetativo em que se encontra, tendo elevados consumos quando apresenta folha nova, os quais se tornam mais moderados com o “amadurecer” da folha.
Water the soil abundantly until enough water comes out of the drainage holes to evenly moisten the soil, always from above (never by immersion), using a watering can with very fine drains (there are specific ones for Bonsai).
Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers).
If you have a dish under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting).
There is no advantage in spraying the leaves, only do it on days when you fertilise and if the fertiliser is specifically for foliar application, but make sure they get dry at night to avoid fungus.
Nutrition: With “FertilBonsai” from February to October/November, and with “BioBonsai” all year round when indoors or from February to November if outdoors. He likes “complete” nutrition plans and appreciates a boost with “MicroBonsai” (also from February to October/November).
Pruning: Responds well to drastic pruning, which can be done at the end of winter before budding, or in summer after defoliation. Maintenance pruning should be done as new leaves appear, allowing 5 to 6 leaves to grow and then cutting back to the first or second.
Transplant: With “TerraBonsai-Folhosas” and “RhizaBonsai” at the end of January after the frosts, before budding begins, always with strong pruning, or in summer with total defoliation.
Wiring: Can be wired all year round, normally with heavy pruning or defoliation.
Wiring is usually done at the end of winter or at the end of summer, both together with formative pruning and partial defoliation.
At the Campolide Bonsais Center, in addition to a wide variety of indoor and outdoor bonsais, tools and accessories, you will find all the support services, including hotel service (for when you are away for longer periods) and hospital (for when you notice signs of illness). negatives in your bonsai that you cannot reverse)
