Native to China, Korea and Japan, it belongs to the Ulmaceae family. Also known as the Chinese Zelcova, it is a small-leaved, semi-deciduous or deciduous tree that is highly prized in Bonsai for its fine branching, bark (it creates “scales” with age) and easy shaping.

Light: Ideally, it prefers living outdoors (where it can behave like a deciduous tree in harsher winters). However, if grown indoors in a bright, sunny spot and kept away from climate-control systems (heating/cooling), it will also do well. Whether kept outdoors or indoors, it’s essential to get 2 to 3 hours of direct sun per day, so indoors it must always be right next to a window with no curtains or blinds.
Watering: Water use depends a lot on its growth stage, with high consumption when it has new leaves, becoming more moderate as the leaves “mature.” Water thoroughly until plenty of water runs out of the drainage holes, to evenly moisten the soil, always from above (never by immersion), using a watering can with very fine holes (there are ones made specifically for Bonsai). Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers). If you use a saucer underneath, never leave standing water (to prevent the roots from rotting). There’s no benefit to misting the leaves, unless you’re using a foliar fertilizer. But make sure the leaves are dry by nightfall to prevent fungus.
Nutrition: Fertilize from Feb to Oct/Nov with suitable products, but if you keep the Bonsai indoors, make sure you provide more complete nutrition suited to those conditions to meet its needs. This Bonsai likes “complete” feeding plans and benefits from an extra boost with suitable products.
Pruning: It responds well to heavy pruning, done at the end of winter before bud break, or in summer after defoliation. Maintenance pruning should be done as new leaves appear, allowing 5 to 6 leaves to grow and then cutting back to the first or second.
Repotting: Use suitable soil at the end of Jan, after the frosts, before bud break, always with a hard prune, or in summer with full defoliation.
Wiring: It can be wired all year round, usually along with heavy pruning or defoliation. Wiring is usually done at the end of winter or the end of summer, in both cases together with shaping pruning and partial defoliation.
