Belongs to the Moraceae family and is native to China and India. There are several species of Ficus grown in Bonsai, but the care is practically the same. All are perennial and medium-sized. What most attracts Bonsai enthusiasts is that it requires little maintenance and has high resistance (it’s often said that “you need to take a course to kill a Ficus!”), combined with the beauty of its bark and aerial roots that it can produce.
Scientific name: Ficus retusa (several species exist)
Common name: Ficus
Location: Indoor Bonsai
Approximate height: 20cm
CARE
Light: Place indoors, next to a window (max. distance 50cm), without curtains or blinds, where it receives 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day, rotating 180º weekly. Keep away from heating/cooling systems.
Watering: Abundant, until plenty of water comes out through the drainage holes, to evenly moisten the soil – always from above, never by immersion – with a fine-rose watering can (specific for Bonsai). Allow the surface layer of soil to dry slightly between each watering. To check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers. If you place a saucer under the Bonsai, never leave standing water (to prevent roots from rotting). There’s no advantage in spraying the leaves, only do so on days when you fertilize, if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but ensure they’re dry by nightfall to prevent fungus formation.
Nutrition: From Feb to Oct/Nov, with a base plan consisting of a complete fertilizer and a biostimulant, which can also be combined with other products.
Pruning: Given the large size of its leaves, it should always be controlled by “Metsumi” at the beginning of budding. When cut it releases latex, which “stops” well by spraying the plant with water.
Repotting: With Deciduous Bonsai Soil in May to Jun (limit mid-Jul), after defoliation or heavy pruning.
Wiring: With defoliation in the warm months, Jun-Jul, it’s a very resistant plant that withstands very heavy work and always responds well, as long as it’s healthy.
WARNING! Representative photograph – the image shown is of an existing specimen in stock at the time the product was added to the online catalog, so it’s a reference. The Bonsai supplied will be similar to the photograph* however, depending on the stage of the growth cycle it’s in, it may vary in shape, appearance or size (e.g. different leaf tone, with more/less foliage, with or without flower/fruit, etc). The ceramic pot seen in the photograph is included in the indicated cost and approximate height.
*All bonsais are shipped in the box seen in the photograph, which is closed (to protect the plant during transport), but the front opening is simple as there’s a perforation that allows the “window” to be opened, as shown in the image. The ribbon/card is only sent during festive seasons.
