Species originating from Madagascar, part of the Rutaceae family. This is a medium-sized tree with deciduous leaves in a bright green tone that emit a citrus aroma when pruned. Also called Operculicarya, it flowers on male and female plants, with no easy dimorphism between genders. It’s rare – in Bonsai – to bear fruit, but to achieve this you need to have one plant of each. It’s a dual-location plant, allowing you to keep it in outdoor or indoor environments. If kept indoors, it’s likely to want to renew its foliage mid-summer. It shouldn’t be too protected in air-conditioned environments and be careful as it needs plenty of sun, minimum 2 to 3 hours/day (ideally at the beginning or end of the day). It’s also recommended to rotate 180° weekly to maintain balanced shape/growth.
Scientific name: Zanthoxylum Piperitum
Common name: Chinese Pepper Tree
Location: Bonsai for indoor or outdoor placement
Approximate height: 20cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Can live outdoors all year round, being deciduous. If grown indoors, it will probably want to renew its leaves in mid-summer. It shouldn’t be too protected in air-conditioned environments and be careful as it needs plenty of sun, minimum 2 to 3 hours/day (ideally at the beginning or end of the day). It’s also recommended to rotate 180° weekly to maintain balanced shape/growth.
Watering: Water the soil abundantly until plenty of water comes out through the drainage holes, moistening the soil evenly – always from above, never by immersion, with a fine-rose watering can (specific for Bonsai). Allow the top layer of soil to dry well between waterings. To check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers. It tends to suffer from root rot with excess water/lack of light, especially after heavy pruning, when we should moderate watering more until new growth resumes. If you have a saucer under the Bonsai, never leave standing water (to prevent roots from rotting). There’s no advantage in spraying the leaves, only do so on days when you fertilize and if the fertilizer is specific for foliar application, but ensure they arrive dry at night to avoid fungi.
Nutrition: From Feb to Nov, fertilize with a base plan consisting of a complete fertilizer and a biostimulant, which can also be combined with other products.
Pruning: Always done above the axil of a compound leaf. When grown indoors, it’s common in summer to do heavy formative pruning so it regrows with new foliage.
Repotting: With Broadleaf Bonsai Soil in Feb/Mar, before growth begins and with heavy pruning.
Wiring: Can be wired all year round.
WARNING! Representative photograph – the image shown is of a specimen in stock at the time the product was placed in the online catalog, so it’s a reference. The Bonsai supplied will be similar to the photograph* although, depending on the stage of the growth cycle it’s in, it may vary in shape, appearance or size (e.g. different leaf tone, with more/less foliage, with or without flower/fruit, etc). The ceramic pot seen in the photograph is included in the indicated cost and approximate height.
*All bonsais are shipped in the box seen in the photograph, which comes closed (to protect the plant during transport), but the front opening is simple as there’s a perforation that allows opening of the “window”, as shown in the image. The ribbon/card is only sent during festive seasons.
