Native to China, Korea and Japan, it belongs to the Ulmaceae family. Also known as the Chinese Zelcova, it is a small-leaved, semi-deciduous or deciduous tree that is highly prized in Bonsai for its fine branching, bark (it creates “scales” with age) and easy shaping.
Scientific name: Ulmus Parvifolia
Common name: Chinese Elm (also Chinese Zelkova)
Location: Bonsai for indoor or outdoor placement
Approximate height: 20-25cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Ideally likes to live outdoors (where it can behave as a deciduous tree in harsher winters), but if grown indoors with good exposure to light and sun and away from climate control systems (heating/cooling), it will also thrive. Whether kept outdoors or indoors, it’s essential to get 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day, so – indoors – it must always be placed by a window without curtains or blinds.
Watering: Water consumption depends greatly on the vegetative state, with high consumption when showing new foliage, which becomes more moderate as the foliage “matures”. Water abundantly until plenty of water comes out through the drainage holes, to evenly moisten the soil, always from above (never by immersion), with a watering can with very fine holes (there are specific ones for Bonsai). Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers). If you have a saucer underneath, never leave standing water (to prevent roots from rotting). There’s no advantage in spraying the leaves, unless when fertilizing you use foliar fertilizer. But ensure the leaves are dry by nightfall to prevent fungi.
Nutrition: Fertilize from Feb to Oct/Nov with suitable products, but if you keep the Bonsai indoors, ensure more complete and appropriate nutrition for those conditions to compensate for needs. This Bonsai likes “complete” nutrition plans and appreciates a boost with suitable products.
Pruning: Responds well to drastic pruning, done in late winter before budding, or in summer after defoliation. Maintenance pruning should be done as new leaves appear, allowing 5 to 6 leaves to grow and then cutting back to the first or second.
Repotting: With suitable soil in late Jan, after frosts, before budding begins always with heavy pruning, or in summer with total defoliation.
Wiring: Can be wired all year round, usually with heavy pruning or defoliation. Usually wiring is done in late winter or late summer, both together with shaping pruning and partial defoliation.
WARNING! Representative photograph – the image shown is of a specimen in stock at the time the product was added to the online catalog, so it’s a reference. The Bonsai supplied will be similar to the photograph, although depending on the phase of the vegetative cycle it’s in, it may vary in shape, appearance or size (e.g. different leaf tone, with more/less foliage, with or without flower/fruit, etc). The ceramic pot seen in the photograph is included in the indicated cost and approximate height.
