Euphorbia eritrea ‘Candelabrum’ is a star of social media and Plant Styling, Design/Fashion, Interior Decoration, and even Architecture blogs. But it’s not a cactus. It’s actually a succulent! However, it looks so much like a traditional cactus that it’s hard to see it as a succulent. Either way, it’s an elegant, sophisticated plant—a piece of art (as each specimen has a unique shape) that requires virtually no maintenance. This is because Euphorbias are masters of survival, capable of storing water and resisting periods of moderate drought. In nature, they can reach up to 11m, although they are slow-growing. In a pot, they’ll never reach this size, but given their resilience and versatility, they usually adapt well, becoming an incredible decor piece in any interior space.
Scientific name: Euphorbia eritrea ‘Candelabrum’
Common names: Candelabra Cactus, Cowboy Cactus
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Origin: Deserts of Africa and South America
Category: Indoor (or outdoor) plant
Approximate height: 120cm
Pot diameter: 24cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight. A spot near a south or west-facing window is ideal, though it tolerates some shade. If planting in the ground, avoid spots exposed to all-day sun, as hot months can turn the plant yellowish due to excess light.
Temperature: Ideally between 12 and 32ÂşC. While hardy, outdoor plants can be sensitive to extremes (protect from frost, for example).
Watering: Infrequent. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings and, even then, don’t rush to water it. In winter, if potted, you can risk monthly or bi-monthly watering. If outdoors, let nature take care of the watering. Remember that overwatering is the main cause of problems. No saucers with standing water, and be careful with decorative pots without drainage holes.
Soil: A sandy soil mix that allows for good drainage. Cactus and succulent substrate is ideal. They aren’t picky about soil pH but won’t tolerate wet soil for long.
Fertilisation: No fertiliser is needed for it to grow well, provided other conditions are met. But cactus fertiliser once a year during the growing season is always a bonus.
Not Pet Friendly: The sap is quite toxic to pets (and humans).
Fun Fact: In its habitat, the sap is used in traditional medicine and for fishing.
