It’s one of the plants that, in the northern hemisphere (where we are), blooms in autumn-winter – hence its popular name “Christmas cactus” – helping to make the cold season less dull and certainly more colorful. In nature, this plant native to tropical climates is epiphytic and lithophytic, growing supported on tree trunks or rocks. From the tips of its green, fleshy but flattened stems, exuberant flowers emerge in shades of pink, white, orange or red. In our climate, this plant thrives best indoors, although it can also be placed outdoors if well protected from frost, heavy rain and direct sun. Besides its common name being very suggestive, and being an extremely ornamental plant, as it belongs to the “air-purifying” group (helping to remove toxins from the surrounding air), it’s always an excellent gift, regardless of the occasion or celebration.

CUIDADOS
Light: Enjoys abundant but filtered light. Does not tolerate direct sun, especially during the hottest hours. Indirect light or partial shade (direct sun preferably in the morning) is the ideal exposure.
Temperature: Ideally between 15°C and 25°C. Protect it from temperatures below 10°C.
Humidity: Considering its natural habitat, it enjoys environments with some relative humidity in the air. In very dry spaces, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant in locations like bathrooms or kitchens. Also keep the plant away from heating/cooling systems.
Watering: Moderate. It’s important to let the soil dry between waterings and ensure good drainage. Watch out for standing water in saucers under the pot or decorative pots without drainage holes, which don’t allow water to drain and promote root rot.
Soil: Requires well-drained soil rich in organic matter, with cactus or succulent mixes recommended.
Fertilization: Monthly fertilization is recommended during spring and summer, with balanced and diluted fertilizer, reducing frequency in autumn and winter.
Pet friendly: Considered a safe plant for pets.
