Heucheras are primarily prized for their undeniably beautiful foliage. Like Begonias, they feature foliage with incredible colours and patterns. But unlike Begonias, in our climate, they should be kept outdoors. Ideally planted in groups to create colourful patches and borders, there are hundreds of cultivars and hybrids with a wide range of colours and textures. They are perfect for flowerbeds, gardens, pots, and planters, and can even be placed on balconies or terraces. While they stand out most in autumn, they are beautiful year-round, as their appearance changes with temperature and light levels. In nature, it’s hard to find a place where Heucheras don’t fit: they thrive in woodlands, rock gardens, pots, borders, and as ground cover. When growing them, choose spots with partial light (early morning sun is ideal). Excessive heat and direct sun from late morning to late afternoon will scorch the foliage. In summer, they produce clusters of bell-shaped flowers (hence their common name) that can be used as cut flowers or left to attract butterflies and bees.

Light: To achieve their most vibrant foliage, Heucheras prefer partial shade, though some varieties tolerate full sun. In most cases, foliage colour may fade when planted in full sun. Ideally, choose a spot with morning sun rather than the hot afternoon sun.
Temperature: Hardy to fluctuations and freezing temperatures, but the ideal range is between 5°C and 35°C.
Watering: Frequent watering is essential during the first year; after that, Heucheras are quite low-maintenance. Let the soil dry out between waterings to avoid waterlogging. Since they prefer partial shade, soil drainage is crucial to ensure water runoff. Soggy soil easily leads to root rot. If this happens, it’s best to move the plants to a drier or sunnier spot.
Soil: Rich in organic matter but light and well-drained (mixing in perlite or sand are good options).
Pruning: Cut back flower stalks after blooming. This redirects energy back to the plant to produce new leaves.
Fertilisation: In spring, using a suitable outdoor plant fertiliser.
Pet-Friendly: According to the ASPCA, this plant is safe for pets.
Fun Fact: Although Heucheras are mainly sought after for their foliage, their elegant flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, appearing in late spring or early summer.
