Ficus Robusta - Ficus elastica 'Robusta Abidjan' (20 cm pot)
The Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ is a classic for interior décor! It’s a timeless plant associated with a retro-chic look, taking us back to 1970s decor. Despite this revival, and although it’s not the exact cultivar used at the time, it’s very similar, but with wider, shinier leaves, boosting the exotic feel it brings to indoor (or outdoor) spaces. Like the “Tineke” variety, it’s low-maintenance when it comes to watering/upkeep, very hardy, long-lasting, and easy to care for—just occasional watering and frequent leaf cleaning to remove built-up dust and keep the plant healthy. In its natural habitat (or if grown in a suitable outdoor location) it can grow up to 60m. However, in a domestic environment, its growth will be more contained and controlled by the size of its pot and appropriate pruning. Ficus elastica are great at removing some toxins from the air, which is why they’re considered air-purifying plants—ideal for indoor spaces.
The difference between Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ and Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ (sometimes called Robusta Abidjan) is mainly aesthetic, related to leaf colour and appearance. Botanically, they’re still varieties/cultivars of the same species. In short, the Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ has dark green leaves. This Ficus elastica ‘Robusta Abidjan’ is a “more dramatic” variant, with highlights in red/burgundy/wine/purple tones, or even violet.
