The olive tree is a hardy, extremely versatile plant—tough, resilient, and well adapted to our climate. It’s an integral part of our landscape, our country’s history, and the Portuguese soul. But it actually originates from Syria, Palestine, and northern Iran, spreading across the Mediterranean basin since antiquity and quickly becoming a species of great economic value: there are records of olives being pressed for olive oil production dating back over 6,000 years. Back in the days of ancient civilisations. The olive tree is evergreen, flowers in spring, and fruits in autumn. Its thick greyish trunk, irregular shapes, and dense foliage in different shades of green make the olive tree highly sculptural and extremely decorative. It should be grown outdoors in full sun, preferring well-drained soil and watering during the first year after planting, and it can reach up to 4 m in height. This compact size is perfect if you have a small balcony or an outdoor space facing east or south. However, don’t forget that a plant in a small pot needs more frequent watering. Even an olive tree—which can handle longer dry spells—may start to decline if, for example, it’s summer, it’s in sun all day, and it isn’t watered for a long period of time. During a heatwave, even worse… This applies to any potted plant, but it’s worth repeating that it also applies to plants like the olive tree—heat/drought tolerant.

CUIDADOS
Light: Full/direct sun (needs at least 4 hours of full/direct sun per day to thrive).
Temperature: Prefers an average annual temperature around 15/20°C, but tolerates both cold and heat extremes well.
Watering: Very drought tolerant—water occasionally, especially in summer. In winter, let the rain do its job (but be careful not to leave standing water in saucers or non-draining decorative pots, as heavy rain can drown the plant if it sits in water for several days).
Humidity: Doesn’t like climates with high relative humidity in the air, which is why it’s more common in the south of Portugal. Avoid planting it in shady areas—always a good bet.
Soil: Adapts well, but prefers fine-textured, deep, well-drained, slightly alkaline soils/substrates.
Pruning: Yearly, should be done in spring, and is essential to keep a rounded/compact shape and a cup-like structure for good light penetration, keeping the plant beautiful and healthy.
Fertilising: between Mar–Aug, 1x/month
Fun fact: It’s widely used as firewood thanks to its high heat output and slow burn, unlike resinous woods. So, if you have a country house in an isolated area or somewhere where summer wildfires are a constant, planting olive trees (at a safe distance from the house) can help slow the spread of flames.
