Salvia microphylla is a perennial shrub found in nature in southeastern Arizona and in the eastern, western and southern mountains of Mexico. It grows up to 1-1.3m in height and width, flowering in the first year and reaching full size in the second year. It’s a very ornamental shrub that spreads well underground producing dense patches of vegetation, perfect for adding a splash of colour to garden beds with a more rustic style. It’s a plant well adapted to our climate that enjoys good sun exposure. The leaves are oval, varying in size and smooth or slightly covered with hairs. When crushed, they release a strong fragrance that has been described as pleasant and mint-like, but also similar to blackcurrant. It flowers in late spring and then again in autumn but with the milder temperatures we’ve been having, it ends up flowering sporadically almost all year round.

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers locations with good sun exposure, should be grown in full sun. If it doesn’t receive a few hours of direct sun per day, not only will flowering be compromised but the plant itself may not survive.
Temperature: Very hardy, ideal for hot and dry climates, although it also tolerates cold and frost.
Watering: Moderate, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings, especially in winter. If in a pot, it’s essential to avoid waterlogging, adapting watering according to the seasons, removing excess standing water from the saucer (or decorative pot without drainage).
Humidity: Appreciates soils with moderate moisture, avoiding waterlogging.
Fertilisation: Apply phosphorus-rich fertiliser in early spring to stimulate flowering.
Pruning: Requires annual pruning to control its shape (especially when planted in the ground) and to remove dead branches.
Soil: Light and well-drained substrates, although it adapts to any location. Tolerates poor, slightly calcareous soils. It only doesn’t tolerate soils without good drainage.
Not Pet-Friendly: All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested by pets or humans, and may cause gastrointestinal symptoms.
Fun fact: The specific epithet microphylla comes from Greek and means “small leaves”. In Mexico, this plant is called mirto de montes or “mountain myrtle”.
