Bay laurel is a shrub that, in our climate and planted in a garden, can reach up to 10 m tall, with a dense crown (which should be thinned inside to improve airflow and prevent pests) and an elegant habit. The leaves are simple, leathery, lance-shaped, dark green and glossy, with a distinctive aroma when crushed. It produces pale yellow flowers from February to April, followed by berries that ripen in autumn and turn black. It’s highly valued in Mediterranean cooking and is well adapted to our climate. It can also be used as a hedge, although as it grows it tends to form more of a crown, leaving a bare trunk without branches and leaves. For this reason, it’s not the ideal choice if you want to create a hedge.

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers full sun or partial shade (direct sun in the morning or late afternoon). It grows well with direct morning light or filtered light; in warmer areas, it’s best to protect it from strong afternoon sun. Choose a growing spot that avoids the most intense summer sun exposure.
Temperature: Ideally between 17 °C and 25 °C. Growth slows below 10 °C; it tolerates down to -5 °C, but prolonged frost can damage it.
Watering: Water moderately, especially in the first years, without waterlogging. In dry soils it can tolerate moderate dry spells.
Humidity: Adapts well to low/moderate humidity climates. It prefers cool, well-drained soils, and doesn’t like constantly waterlogged or very dry soil.
Fertilising: Apply an organic fertiliser, such as compost or humus, between spring and summer. When grown in a pot, feed once a month during the warm season, following the instructions on the chosen product label – and make sure it’s suitable for outdoor plants.
Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape, control size, or remove damaged branches.
Life cycle: Perennial; lifespan up to around 100 years.
Soil: Prefers cool, loose, well-drained substrates rich in organic matter.
Not Pet Friendly: The leaves contain essential oils in concentrations that can cause irritation or toxicity in pets if ingested or handled excessively.
Fun fact: Since Antiquity, bay leaves have been used to crown winners (warriors, poets), symbolising honour and glory. The term “laureate” comes from this classical tradition.
