Bougainvilleas are hardy climbers with vigorous growth. You’ll often see them further south in Portugal, and it’s simply irresistible how they beautify walls, pergolas, and arches. Thanks to their intense flowering and vibrant colours (although the most common colour is pink/purple, it’s also common to find red, white, or orange varieties), they stand out, creating striking Mediterranean-style effects. The floral bracts cluster at the tips of the branches from early spring through winter, so having a bougainvillea in your garden or terrace means colour for much of the year. It can be used as a shrub, a climber, or in hedging, but once planted in the ground and well established, it will need frequent pruning to control the excessive growth of its strong, thorny branches. It can reach 5 to 10 m in height and, to grow as a climber, it needs a support structure.
