Known as the “boat orchid” because of the shape of its fleshy flowers, in a wide range of vibrant colours and sometimes fragrant, the Cymbidium orchid is best kept outdoors. It’s hardier than other orchid species (like Phalaenopsis) that need to be kept indoors in our climate, and it doesn’t require much care to bloom. It’s a very elegant, versatile plant that tolerates our winters and summers, although it should be planted in sheltered spots away from direct sun. As part of the orchid family, it also produces lush blooms that vary in colour and pattern. Perfect for pots or planters on a balcony, terrace, or in the garden.

CUIDADOS
Light: Give them as much light as possible without burning the leaves. They can handle direct sun if sheltered during the hottest part of the day. This means protecting them from midday sun—keep them in the shade. They can handle full sun in the early morning or from mid-afternoon onwards.
Temperature: They tolerate seasonal temperature swings between 7°C and 30°C. Most survive light frost, but it’s best to avoid it. Bring them indoors when temperatures drop to 4°C, to a bright, cool spot. In milder climates, they can be grown outdoors year-round.
Watering: In the warmer months, make sure the soil stays slightly moist, as they’re semi-terrestrial plants that usually produce all their vegetative growth in spring–summer and need water during that period. In winter, reduce watering/let the rain do the job (except during moderate/prolonged dry spells). Ideally, let the substrate dry slightly between waterings.
Fertilizing: Use a suitable orchid fertilizer during the spring-summer growing season, following the label’s dosage instructions.
Pruning: Remove wilted/damaged flowers to encourage blooming and keep the plant looking good and healthy.
Soil: Choose a mix that retains water. Medium-grade pine bark with some peat and perlite is a common mix. Choosing a substrate made for this type of orchid, sold in garden centres and online shops like ours, is the best option.
Pet Friendly: Considered safe for pets and non-toxic, though supervision is advised as eating large amounts may cause gastrointestinal upset.
Tips: If your Cymbidium is in bloom, wait until it finishes flowering before repotting. A common repotting mistake is moving it to a pot that’s much larger than the one it was in. Cymbidiums don’t like being in oversized pots! Whether you use plastic pots, terracotta pots, or baskets, choose sizes only slightly larger than the root mass.
