The geranium is a staple of Portuguese balconies and gardens and is well adapted to our climate. There are several types of geraniums in the Pelargonium genus: the most common is this variety (Pelargonium zonale), ideal for decorating flower beds or growing in ground planters, as it grows upright, with leaves covered in a light fuzz and producing showy flowers in a range of vibrant colours. In general, geraniums like plenty of sun to bloom abundantly; however, of all the species, this one performs best with less sun. But whichever variety you choose, geraniums are always easy-care plants that bloom for many months, able to turn even the smallest balcony into a great outdoor space for relaxing and enjoying.
Scientific name: Pelargonium zonale

Family: Geraniaceae
Origin: Southern Africa
Climate: Temperate, Mediterranean, Subtropical
Category: Outdoor plant
Altura aproximada: 30cm
Pot diameter: 14 cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Full sun – around 4 hours of direct sun per day to ensure abundant flowering, providing shade during the hottest hours, especially in the warmest months of the year and if kept in pots.
Watering: Drought-tolerant and very sensitive to waterlogging. Let the soil dry out between waterings, especially in winter. Water more often in summer, but without overdoing it so the roots don’t rot (no saucers with standing water, and watch out for decorative pots without drainage holes, as the water can’t escape).
Soil: Rich in organic matter and well-draining.
Pruning: During the flowering season, lightly prune the longer stems and remove spent flowers to encourage branching in the desired direction and stimulate new blooms.
Diseases: Check the stems and flower buds regularly. If holes appear or, when pruning, you notice the stems/trunks are hollow, the plant has likely been attacked by caterpillars (geranium bronze butterfly, or Cacyreus marshalli), which feed and tunnel inside stems and leaves, weakening the plant and causing rot. Apply a specific product (systemic insecticide or a suitable biological product) as soon as possible.
Pet friendly: Yes, this plant is safe for pets.
Fun fact: The Pelargonium peltatum variety is very similar, but has a trailing habit, making it a better choice for window boxes or hanging baskets. The Pelargonium grandiflorum variety is easier to tell apart from P. zonale and P. peltatum thanks to its leaf shape (more deeply cut leaves) and the size and range of flower tones.
