If you’re looking for a Helleborus shrub that blooms in the coldest months of the year, is easy to care for, and extremely hardy, this is more than the right choice. Helleborus surprise us with a wealth of flowers, just when nature and the garden have less colour. Most varieties start flowering in November, tolerating low temperatures and frost. Others bloom at the end of winter and keep flowering through spring. After flowering, they’re an excellent groundcover plant from late spring through autumn. Despite their delicate look, they’re truly cold-hardy plants, and all varieties can be grown in pots (balconies or terraces). If you pair them with conifers, Skimmias or low-growing/groundcover plants, Helleborus will always look great and add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any outdoor space. They’re especially well suited to the North/Centre regions and higher-altitude areas, where winters are cooler and more humid. In the warmer regions of the South and inland, plant it in spots protected from direct sun to ensure good growth and flowering. It’s an excellent option for shadier gardens, beds and borders, and naturalistic/Mediterranean gardens.
Scientific name: Helleborus sp.

Category: Outdoor plant

CUIDADOS
Light: They prefer shade or partial shade (direct sun only in the early morning or late in the day). It’s important to avoid direct sun exposure, especially during the hottest hours.
Watering: Needs regular watering after planting or if kept in a pot, keeping the top of the substrate slightly moist between waterings in the hottest months of the year, but watch out for waterlogging to avoid root rot (no saucers with standing water, and be careful with non-draining decorative pots where water can get trapped).
Temperature: Highly resistant to cold and moderate frosts, adapting very well to mainland Portugal’s temperate climate.
Fertilising: As hardy, low-maintenance plants, they only need feeding with a suitable product to encourage more vigorous growth and intense flowering.
Soil: They like well-drained soils, rich in organic matter and with a neutral pH.
Pruning: In late winter/early spring, remove old/dry leaves to keep the plant looking good and healthy, and to encourage flowering.
Not pet-friendly: This plant is toxic to pets. All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested.
Fun fact: Although all Helleborus varieties are known in Europe as the Christmas Rose, this name only applies to one species, Helleborus niger, the true “celebrity” among all Helleborus.
