Lavandula stoechas is a perennial, aromatic shrub with a rustic appearance that requires minimal care to stay healthy, typically reaching between 30 and 100cm in height, although certain subspecies can grow up to 2m. The stems are highly branched and the leaves are greyish-green, ending in spikes that display a tuft of bracts at the tip in shades of violet, purple and sometimes slightly blue. These showy violet or purple bracts, resembling “rabbit ears” or “butterfly wings” (hence one of its common names), make this one of the most well-known Lavender species, especially since it’s easily found in central and southern Portugal, adding wonderful tufts of violet color to woodlands or more arid terrain from March to September, during its flowering period. Beyond its ornamental value, it’s widely used in aromatherapy and perfumery and is a melliferous plant, attracting bees and butterflies, making it ideal for pollinator gardens and vegetable patches.
