Lemon balm has an unmistakable lemon scent. It’s a perennial herb in the mint family. It blooms in summer or towards the end of it, covering itself in small white flowers. In temperate climates (with harsher or more defined winters/summers), the stems dry out in winter and turn green again in spring. It has countless benefits: besides its ornamental value, it’s also a honey plant and widely used in traditional medicine, as an aromatic herb, or in aromatherapy. It’s used in infusions or in cooking to add a fresh touch to meat, fish, or desserts. The plant can grow quite fast and makes good ground cover.

CUIDADOS
Light: Should be grown in full sun.
Temperature: Tolerates down to -15°C.
Watering: Needs regular, consistent watering, especially during the warmer months. The soil should always be slightly moist, but well-drained, to prevent root rot.
Pruning: You can also prune it regularly to give it a balanced shape with fragrant foliage.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, light, non-calcareous substrates.
Not Pet Friendly: Although it isn’t considered highly toxic, its essential oil can cause skin irritation. Caution is recommended around pets.
Fun fact: Its flowers are especially attractive to bees, as already suggested by its botanical genus name—Melissa—which comes from Greek and means “bee”!
