Although it’s more commonly found as a shrub in mainland Portugal, Metrosidero is a large evergreen tree with a very interesting colour—greyish green—that can reach up to 20 m in nature, under ideal conditions. It’s extremely resistant to wind, poor soils, and salinity, which is why it’s so popular here. A great choice if you don’t have the time or experience to care for plants, but you have a garden, balcony, or terrace and want plants well adapted to our climate that use little water. But this plant’s versatility doesn’t end there: it makes excellent hedges, as it tolerates frequent pruning, blocks wind/visibility, and is fantastic for dividing spaces—even in harsh conditions. When you think a plot is too difficult and no plant will adapt, try a Metrosidero. In general, it tolerates all soil types well, including heavier clay soils, stony or saline soils, as well as windy and very hot locations. It also flowers in the summer months, attracting various pollinating insects to the garden. It doesn’t get any better than this!
Scientific name: Metrosideros excelsa
Common names: Metrosidero, Fire Tree, Metrossídero
Family: Myrtaceae
Origin: Southern Hemisphere (New Zealand)
Climate: Temperate
Category: Outdoor plants
Approx. height: 60–70cm
Pot diameter: 22cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Full/direct sun. It doesn’t tolerate shady spots well.
Watering: Regular in the first year, then more spaced out. In a pot, it will need more frequent watering. Watch out for waterlogging and standing water in saucers or decorative pots without drainage holes.
Soil: Tolerant of all soil types.
Pruning: One to two cuts per year. If needed, it also tolerates hard pruning, as it regenerates easily. Regular pruning can compromise flowering.
Not Pet Friendly: All parts of this plant are toxic if ingested by dogs, with the seeds being the most toxic.
Fun fact: Native to New Zealand, they’re abundant along the coast and are known as “Pohutukawa”, which in the indigenous Māori language means “sprinkled by sea spray”. A direct link to its resistance to sea breezes.
