Myrtle is a dense, evergreen, highly aromatic shrub that can reach 1 to 5 m in height, becoming a small tree. The leaves are opposite, ovate-lanceolate, leathery, dark green and glossy on the upper surface, lighter underneath, and release an intense scent when crushed. The flowers are white (or slightly pinkish), highly aromatic, with numerous stamens that give them a showy look. After flowering, berries/fruits form, dark blue to bluish-black, slightly fleshy, edible, and much appreciated by birds. It’s an excellent choice for gardens because it’s native to our region, so it’s adapted to our climate and a sustainable option.

Light: Prefers full sun, though it tolerates partial shade. Strong sun exposure promotes better flowering and growth.
Temperature: Adapts well to mild climates, tolerating light frosts down to around –10 °C.
Watering: Very drought-tolerant, only needing watering during prolonged periods of heat and dry soil.
Humidity: Prefers well-drained soils and can grow in drier ground typical of the Mediterranean climate.
Fertilising: Annual feeding in spring with a balanced fertiliser is useful to encourage flowering and growth.
Pruning: Do it in winter or early spring, before flowering, to keep a compact shape and encourage new blooms.
Life cycle: Perennial. It keeps evergreen foliage all year round.
Soil: Adapts to a range of substrates/soils, preferring well-drained ones, even poor or drier soils; tolerates neutral to slightly
alkaline soils.
Not pet friendly: It’s best to prevent pets from ingesting it, as the plant contains tannins and essential oils that can cause digestive effects if
ingested in large amounts.
Fun fact: Myrtle is a plant of great cultural and symbolic importance in Portugal and across the Mediterranean basin. In ancient times, it was considered sacred, a symbol of love and beauty, dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite/Venus.
