A rose bush is essential in any garden, terrace, or balcony. These are extraordinary shrub plants—always elegant and highly versatile. They suit many styles, adapt well to different soil types, and, aside from a few hours of direct sun a day, need little else to beautify gardens, beds, and planters. The famous English “David Austin” roses—bred by David Austin himself—combine the beauty and fragrance of old roses with the hardiness and repeat flowering of modern roses, producing lush rosette-shaped blooms with many petals, varied colours, and intense fragrances (such as myrrh, fruit, tea, and more). These rose bushes are highly prized for their timeless beauty, fragrance, and ability to flower abundantly, bringing a touch of romance and sophistication to green spaces from spring/summer through to autumn.
Scientific name: Rosa spp.
Variety/cultivar name: Fragrant rose, ‘Wild Edric’
Family: Rosaceae
Category: Outdoor plant
Approx. height: 50 cm
Pot diameter: 22 cm (6 L)
The Wild Edric rose produces pointed buds that open into semi-double flowers in a deep velvety pink, revealing golden stamens. Its strong old-rose fragrance has notes of clove, watercress, and cucumber. It forms an upright, dense, thorny shrub with pointed dark-green foliage, and its flowers are very attractive to bees and other pollinators, supporting honey production and biodiversity. As for the name, Wild Edric was a Saxon lord from Shropshire and a leader of English resistance during the Norman Conquest. Legend has it he married a fairy princess, who agreed to marry him as long as he never scolded her. They lived happily for many years, until one morning, when he scolded her, she vanished. Heartbroken, Wild Edric searched the countryside for her, but never found her. It’s said his ghost is still seen riding across the hills of Shropshire. To honour the legend, this English rose was given his name.
Features of the ‘Wild Edric’ Rose:
Flower colour: Deep velvety pink.
Fragrance: Intense old-rose scent.
Flower size: Medium (5–8 cm diameter).
Height: Can reach up to 1.70 m, making it ideal for borders and garden beds, or for growing along walls or fences with support structures, as it grows quite tall—beautifully decorating garden corners or house entrances.
CUIDADOS
Light: Full sun (without around 4 hours of direct sun/day, it won’t flower well).
Temperature: Rose bushes are well adapted to our temperate climate. They prefer temperatures between 15°C and 28°C but tolerate lower temperatures well (down to -20°C).
Watering: Moderate—after planting, in the first summer, and during flowering periods. Reduce watering in winter—if it’s outdoors, let the rain do the job (water only if there’s a prolonged dry spell).
Fertilising: Use a rose fertiliser in spring–summer, following the instructions on the product label.
Pruning: Like most rose bushes, this variety also tolerates pruning well. Remove dry/damaged branches and spent blooms to encourage flowering and keep the desired shape. Prune in late winter or early spring.
Soil: They adapt well to different soil/substrate types, as long as they’re light and rich in organic matter (they really like humus). The soil should be well-drained, as they don’t tolerate waterlogging.
Pet Friendly: Most rose bushes themselves aren’t considered toxic to pets. However, if ingested, the thorns can cause serious injuries.
Tip: Rose bushes don’t like excessive wind exposure, but the chosen spot should be airy to prevent fungal issues on leaves and flowers.
