This Mediterranean shrub quickly grows into a sizeable tree (up to 10m) when planted in the ground. It’s robust, with an irregular rounded crown and a familiar rustic look, often found in the wild, especially south of the Tagus, alongside Cork Oaks, Holm Oaks, and Maritime Pines. The reason is simple: its Mediterranean origin makes it highly adaptable to temperate climates and coastal areas. You can plant it alone or in groups to create living hedges. Its leaves are lance-shaped, green, and glossy. White flowers appear in drooping clusters in late summer or early autumn, followed by strawberry-like fruit that is sweet and tasty when ripe. The fruit is used to produce the famous “Aguardente de Medronho” spirit, but it’s also used in jams, jellies, and honey. Its green branches are also used in floral arrangements.

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade (direct sun for part of the day).
Temperature: Very hardy, tolerating both high and low temperatures (down to -15 °C).
Watering: Water frequently in the first year; afterwards, it tolerates long dry spells well, especially in the ground—pay closer attention if it’s in a pot or planter. Does not tolerate waterlogging.
Humidity: Adapts well to various environments and handles coastal areas (wind and sea breeze).
Fertilisation: Low maintenance—just fertilise in spring with a suitable product, especially if potted.
Pruning: In autumn or spring, remove dead or crossing branches and thin out the inner crown to improve airflow, light penetration, and prevent pests/fungi.
Life cycle: Perennial.
Soil: Tolerates various soil types but prefers slightly acidic, sandy, siliceous, fresh, and well-drained ground.
Not Pet Friendly: This plant is not safe for pets.
Fun facts: Unedo is Latin for “I eat only one”. The production of spirits through fruit fermentation is the main economic interest of this crop. However, strawberry tree firewood and charcoal are superior in quality to Holm Oak, though the economic viability of their production is debatable.
