Scientific name: Wisteria sinensis
Common noun: Glicínia-chinesa, Glicínia, Wistéria
Family: Fabaceae
Origin: China
Category: Outdoor plant
Climate: Temperate
Description: Wisteria sinensis is a vigorous, deciduous climber, known for its impressive spring flowering. The flowers, which are violet, blue or white in colour, are grouped in hanging clusters 15 to 30 cm long and give off a sweet, pleasant aroma. These flowers appear before the leaves, providing a striking visual spectacle. The leaves are composed of 9 to 13 oblong leaflets, bright green in colour. The fruits are flat pods, 5 to 10 cm long, which remain on the plant during winter.
Care
Light: Prefers locations with good sun exposure, although it tolerates partial shade. Flowering is more abundant when grown in full sun.
Temperature: Cold-resistant, tolerating temperatures down to -15°C.
Watering: Needs regular watering during the active growth period (spring and summer), keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. In winter, watering frequency can be reduced.
Humidity: Prefers moderately moist soil, avoiding waterlogging.
Fertilisation: Apply phosphorus-rich fertiliser in early spring to stimulate flowering.
Height: 50-60cm.
Pruning: Requires regular pruning to control growth and promote flowering. Pruning should be done in summer, after flowering, and again in winter, reducing the side branches to about 5cm.
Life cycle: Evergreen.
Substrate type: Fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil.
Not Pet Friendly: All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested by pets or humans and can cause gastrointestinal symptoms.
Interesting fact: Wisteria sinensis is often used to cover pergolas, walls and other garden structures, thanks to its vigorous growth and exuberant flowering. In the city of Sierra Madre, California, there is a specimen planted in 1892 that is considered one of the largest wisteria in the world, covering a significant area and producing millions of flowers during flowering.
