Azalea - Rhododendron (14 cm pot, white or pink flower)
The Azalea (or Rhododendron) is an excellent choice for decorating gardens or terraces, as it is a small shrub – with a small canopy – slow-growing but very ornamental, with intense flowering in early spring. These plants are popular for their rich and varied flower colours, which often appear as early as winter when the rest of the garden is bare. Like Camellias and Hydrangeas, Azaleas prefer acidic soil. Since plants draw most of their nutrients and minerals from the soil, this is a key “detail” to consider when choosing an Azalea. You should use a special substrate for acidophilic plants, available at our Garden Centres. In Portugal, Azaleas thrive best in the North and Centre, as they easily tolerate freezing temperatures but struggle with heat and sea winds.

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers partial shade (ideally direct sun only in the morning or late afternoon). In southern regions, they should be grown in spots protected from extreme summer sun and heat. However, if planted in too much shade, flowering will be sparse.
Watering: Regular (especially in small pots), keeping the substrate slightly moist but not waterlogged. Watch out for saucers or decorative pots without drainage holes, as trapped water can cause root rot. Pay extra attention to watering during hot months!
Humidity: Mulching with pine bark to keep roots cool and moist is always a good option. Plus, pine bark is slightly acidic, making it doubly beneficial for Azaleas.
Soil: Like Camellias or Hydrangeas, Azaleas also need substrate for acid-loving plants in the planting hole. It is also important to ensure well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter.
Pruning: Light pruning in late spring/early summer after flowering to keep the plant dense and stimulate next season’s blooms.
Fertilisation: Like all acidophilic plants, fertilise at least twice a year with suitable fertilisers to help maintain a lower soil pH. This ensures more abundant flowering, greener foliage, and healthier plants resistant to pests and fungi.
Not Pet Friendly: Note that this plant is toxic to dogs and cats.
Fun Fact: Rhododendron is a genus containing a vast group of hybrids and species with an immense diversity of shapes and colours. The most common shrub in Portugal is evergreen and medium-sized.
