The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is a vigorous, evergreen shrub with dark green, glossy leaves and serrated edges. This form with a small crown (standard) is highly ornamental—perfect for decorating balconies, terraces, or gardens. Its flowers are large, solitary, and showy, coming in a wide variety of colours, including red, pink, yellow, white, and orange. Flowering occurs mainly in spring and summer, extending into autumn in mild climates. It’s a very ornamental plant thanks to its lush, colourful flowers, even though they last for a very short time: around 24 hrs. The good news is that, in the right conditions and in its typical flowering season in Mediterranean regions (spring/summer), it can flower almost continuously, as new buds form while older flowers fade, keeping the Hibiscus looking beautiful and lush during the milder/warmer months of the year.

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers bright spots with good sun exposure; adapts to full sun or partial shade. In very hot regions, it’s best to provide some shade during the strongest hours of sun.
Temperature: Sensitive to cold, does not tolerate frost. In regions with harsh winters, it should be grown in a pot so it can be protected during winter.
Watering: Needs regular watering, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. In summer, water more often; in winter, reduce frequency.
Humidity: It likes environments with moderate humidity. In very dry locations, it can benefit from leaf misting.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser (e.g., NPK 10-10-10) every 15 days during spring and summer to encourage growth and flowering.
Pruning: Perform structural and maintenance pruning in late winter or early spring to encourage branching and flowering. Remove dry or damaged branches regularly.
Life cycle: Perennial.
Soil: Fertile, well-draining substrate rich in organic matter. Prefers a pH between 6.0 and 6.5.
Not Pet Friendly: There’s no specific documentation on the toxicity of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis for pets. However, it’s always advisable to prevent animals from eating parts of the plant.
Fun facts: Each flower lasts a very short time, typically 24 to 48 hours! Although the scientific name Hibiscus rosa-sinensis means “China rose”, this Hibiscus isn’t related to true roses. It’s the national flower of Malaysia and Hawaii.
