Calathea orbifolia features impressive and lush foliage. It’s the ultimate expression of exoticism and tropical flair, displayed in its large leaves with a lovely textured appearance (leather-like to the touch), green tones and light stripes, making this plant one of the trendiest, probably a favorite in interior decoration. However, like all Calatheas, it won’t be the right choice for those wanting to start out in the world of plants, as keeping this natural wonder healthy can be challenging. Native to regions with tropical climates, it enjoys plenty of indirect/filtered light, since – in its natural habitat – it lives beneath other larger species that prevent direct sun from overwhelming or damaging its delicate leaves. And it thrives in environments with high relative humidity (which we often don’t have in our homes), as befits a native of South American tropical forests. To make things a bit more complicated, like its relatives, it loves being watered with rainwater or mineral water and is very sensitive to waterlogging, so attention must be paid to stagnant water in saucers or decorative pots without drainage holes. On the plus side, it’s another plant included in the “air purifying” group and is Pet Friendly, making it the right choice to bring nature and sophistication into your home.
Scientific name: Calathea orbifolia

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers bright indirect light. Does not tolerate direct sun exposure (and can cause leaf burn).
Watering: Keep soil slightly moist, watering when the top 2.5 cm are dry. Avoid waterlogging.
Humidity: Enjoys environments with high relative humidity (70-80%). Clean leaves regularly with a damp cloth, mist on hot summer days and/or use a humidifier in drier environments.
Temperature: Ideal between 18°C and 24°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C, cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.
Fertilizing: Apply fertilizer suitable for green/indoor plants during spring-summer.
Pruning: Remove dry or damaged leaves to encourage new growth. Clean leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.
Life cycle: Perennial
Soil: Light substrate, rich in organic matter and well-drained
Pet Friendly: Safe for pets.
Fun fact: Like all Calatheas, it’s also called a “Prayer Plant” because its leaves move, changing position throughout the day. But watch out! If you notice the leaves aren’t showing this movement, it could mean your Calathea is thirsty.
