The Pilea peperomioides, also known as the “Pancake Plant”, “Chinese Money Plant” or “Friendship Plant”, is perfect for your home or as a gift. Native to China, it became popular because it’s low-maintenance and because of the way it grows—its leaves around the stem—which is not only very original, but also looks great in many décor styles. It grows fairly quickly—just wait for the soil to dry before watering—and, like many other plants that in our climate should be kept indoors, it loves bright light but can’t handle direct sun, especially during the hottest summer hours. Once it’s rooted and has some size, tiny baby plants start to sprout around the main stem, making propagation really easy. At that point, you can take cuttings and give them to friends. According to Eastern philosophy, it’s a good practice and may bring you luck and fortune. At the very least, it’s a lovely way to show affection to someone you care about! And as if that weren’t enough, it’s pet-friendly and also helps purify the air indoors.

CARE
Light: Place it in a spot with bright indirect light, though it tolerates some periods of partial shade well. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Temperature: It likes temperatures between 16 °C and 24 °C, but tolerates down to 10 °C.
Humidity: It enjoys moderate to high humidity—keeping it in the bathroom can be a great idea (as long as there’s plenty of natural light and ventilation). Using a humidifier during drier months, or in drier environments, can be beneficial.
Watering: Water only when the potting mix is dry (the “finger test” is a good option). It doesn’t tolerate waterlogging (watch out for saucers with standing water or decorative pots without drainage where watering water can pool unnoticed). It also doesn’t tolerate extreme drought—in those situations the plant may drop some leaves.
Soil: Rich in organic matter, light and well-draining (an indoor plant potting mix will work well).
Fertilising: Feed monthly during spring with a fertiliser suitable for green/indoor plants.
Pet friendly: Safe for pets.
Fun fact: Also called the “Missionary Plant”—this popular name comes from how it made its way from China to Europe, via a Norwegian missionary.
