The Snake Plant is one of the most popular houseplants. Its stiff green leaves can grow up to 76 cm tall and are sword-shaped (hence the common name). With horizontal patterns, they may vary in lighter/darker tones, but unlike the “Espada de Sta. Bárbara”, this one doesn’t have a yellow edge around the leaves. Like all Sansevierias, it’s ideal if you don’t have much time or experience caring for plants, as it’s almost impossible for it not to survive indoors, since it tolerates tough conditions like long dry spells, temperature changes, or lower-light spaces. It’s also ideal for indoor spaces because it belongs to the “air-purifying” group, meaning it helps remove toxins from the air (such as formaldehyde and benzene) and improves relative humidity. As with other Sansevierias, it grows slowly, and a sign of dryness/lack of water is “wrinkles” (dehydration ridges) appearing on the leaves, which also start to look drier—much like human skin would. In that case, just increase the amount or frequency of watering, always letting excess water drain after watering and making sure the soil dries well between waterings.
Scientific name: Sansevieria zeylanica
Common names: Snake Plant, Mother-in-law’s Tongue
Family: Asparagaceae
Origin: Tropical regions of Africa (Nigeria, Congo, Kenya, Tanzania) and parts of Asia (India, Sri Lanka)
Climate: Tropical, subtropical
Category: Indoor plant
Approx. height: 60 cm
Pot diameter: 17 cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers bright indirect light, but tolerates low-light conditions. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. If placed in a darker spot, the leaves will tend to become darker.
Temperature: Ideal between 18°C and 27°C (avoid temperatures below 10°C)
Watering: Water when the substrate is completely dry. Don’t leave standing water in saucers or in decorative pots without drainage holes.
Humidity: Adapts well to low-humidity environments. It doesn’t require regular misting, but it’s recommended to wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to keep the plant looking good and healthy.
Fertilising: Apply during spring and summer.
Pruning: Remove damaged or dry leaves at the base with clean scissors. Avoid cutting the leaf tips, as they won’t regrow.
Soil: Light, well-draining substrate, preferably sandy (cactus and succulent mix is ideal). Avoid soils that retain too much moisture.
Not Pet Friendly: Toxic to pets if ingested and may cause gastrointestinal irritation.
Fun fact: In Nigeria’s Yoruba culture, Sansevieria zeylanica is considered a sacred plant, associated with protection and good luck. In Portugal, it’s also strongly associated with protection and luck, so it’s often placed by the entrance to homes.
