The Swiss Cheese Plant is a climbing plant, distinguished by its distinctive ‘holey’ leaves. It’s easy to care for and prefers abundant indirect light, although it tolerates shadier environments. It is a plant that easily adapts to the environment in which it is located and, therefore, is the perfect companion for both beginners and more experienced people in the world of plants. It’s essential to clean its leaves to maintain their glossy appearance and detect diseases early. This plant initially behaves like a shrub, but eventually becomes epiphytic, meaning it develops aerial roots that anchor to nearby supports, so it will need a stake or support structure. In their natural environment, Monsteras produce yellowish or white flowers, very rarely seen in indoor environments. When purchasing a Monstera, it’s normal not to find many holes in the leaves or to only see them on one side of the leaf. The characteristic holes of this species appear mainly when the plant is already in its adult phase, meaning older and healthier plants create fenestrated leaves.

CUIDADOS
Light: Enjoys indirect/filtered light environments (does not tolerate direct sun, especially during hot hours – even if it survives, the leaves will look poor, burnt/yellowed and the plant won’t develop well).
Temperature: 18 to 27ÂşC
Watering: During spring and summer, maintain good moisture in the top layer of soil. Reduce watering frequency during autumn and winter, to avoid root rot (waterlogging). Check the substrate moisture before watering again – the “finger test” is always a good option.
Soil: As an epiphytic plant (which in nature grows attached to tree trunks) it does well in many soil types but prefers loamy or silty soils (loamy soil is a balanced and ideal mix for cultivation, while silty soil has a dominant composition of silt particles, giving it different drainage and workability properties), rich in organic matter.
Fertilization: Fertilize from March to September with products suitable for green plants.
Not Pet Friendly: It’s poisonous and irritates dogs’ mucous membranes. Its leaves, when ingested, can cause irritation, numbness of the tongue and vomiting.
Fun fact: The botanical name Monstera deliciosa is curious: the term “monstera” comes from the Latin word for giant, referring to the size its leaves reach (especially in nature); the term “deliciosa” relates to its fruit, referring to its flavor and aroma – when ripe, at which stage it’s edible and has a very pleasant taste, compared to a mix of banana and pineapple.
