Aglaonemas are a great way to bring beauty indoors! There are loads of varieties, each with its own distinctive, unexpected look. Like Calatheas, they almost look artificial, with colours and patterns whose beauty and exotic feel really stand out. Like Calatheas, they’re also prized for helping to purify the indoor air around them, little by little. However, unlike Calatheas, they’re toxic if ingested by pets. So it’s best to keep an eye on curious pets (and small children) around these plants, or place them out of reach. Aglaonema ‘Cleopatra’ stands out for its elegant foliage, with a pale green centre and dark green speckled edges. It’s a compact, rounded plant—perfect for tables or plant groupings in modern interiors.
Scientific name: Aglaonema ‘Cleopatra’
Common names: Variegated Chinese evergreen, Aglaonema Cleopatra
Family: Araceae
Origin: Derived from species native to tropical forests of Asia and
New Guinea
Climate: Tropical to subtropical
Category: Indoor plant
Approx. height: 70–75 cm
Pot diameter: 21 cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers indirect or filtered light. Although it tolerates low-light
spaces, moderate light brings out the variegated edges of the
leaves best.
Temperature: Ideally kept between 18 °C and 24 °C. It does not tolerate
cold draughts or temperatures below 15 °C, which can cause dark, oily spots
on the leaves.
Watering: This plant likes soil that stays consistently moist, but never
waterlogged. Water moderately, letting the top few centimetres of
soil dry out between waterings.
Humidity: ‘Cleopatra’ doesn’t need high humidity; it adapts
well to normal household humidity.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser during
spring and summer, or an organic fertiliser every 2–3 months.
Pruning: Remove dry or damaged leaves to keep it compact
and encourage new growth.
Life cycle: Perennial, ideal for ongoing indoor growing with
the right conditions.
Substrate type: Well-draining soil rich in organic matter (e.g.:
potting mix with perlite or sand), slightly acidic to neutral.
Not Pet Friendly: Toxic if ingested, as it contains calcium
oxalates that cause mucous and skin irritation.
Fun fact: Aglaonemas are also valued as air-purifying plants,
helping remove toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene.
