The opening of Andaz Lisbon, in the heart of Baixa Pombalina, featured Horto do Campo Grande’s expertise in the design and installation of green solutions tailored to the characteristics of each space, in a project coordinated by Vera Quintas (Eng.), where the technical component and the hotel’s identity were developed in close coordination.

Located on Rua do ComĂ©rcio, just steps from Praça do ComĂ©rcio and the Rua Augusta Arch, the new five-star hotel marks the arrival of the Andaz brand in Portugal, bringing with it a hospitality approach focused on valuing local culture and an experience close to the city’s daily life. This framework was decisive for the definition of all implemented solutions, including the plant component.

With 170 rooms and suites, the hotel features spaces where contemporary aesthetics incorporate references to Portuguese tradition, visible in the materials, textures, and the presence of elements linked to Lisbon’s identity. The diversity of typologies, solar orientations, and environments required a selection of species capable of responding to different light, use, and maintenance conditions, ensuring a coherent integration throughout the complex.

In common areas, such as the lobby and the Andaz Lounge—a social space inspired by the energy of Lisbon’s kiosks, music, and the urban environment—the intervention prioritized solutions that keep up with this dynamic. The presence of plants was designed to reinforce the experience of the space without interfering with its fluidity, contributing to a welcoming environment aligned with the identity of this central hub of the hotel.

At Luzzi, the rooftop restaurant, the interpretation of the space is marked by its relationship with the city, with views over the Baixa and the Tagus River, and by a gastronomic proposal that starts from Portuguese heritage for a contemporary approach. Here, the selection of species took into account direct exposure to outdoor conditions, such as wind, thermal variations, and solar intensity, prioritizing resistant solutions with controlled maintenance, capable of keeping up with the continuous use of the space without losing aesthetic quality.

In the suites, where the atmosphere becomes more private, the intervention was more restrained. The choice fell on species suitable for indoor spaces, compatible with different light levels and designed to reinforce a peaceful atmosphere, aligned with the comfort and attention to detail that characterize these spaces, where design blends global references with discreet elements of local culture.

Also in the gym, equipped with Technogym technology, and in the courtyard, the selection of plants took into consideration the specific conditions of each area, from ventilation to intensity of use, ensuring appropriate solutions from both a functional and aesthetic point of view.

The presence of works by national and international artists, as well as the use of materials such as cork, tile, stone, and wood, contribute to the hotel’s very own identity, where each element is thought out in relation to the whole. In this context, the choice of pots also played a relevant role, guided by technical criteria: drainage, stability, and durability, but also by the need for integration with the language of the different spaces.

Throughout the Andaz Lisbon, Horto do Campo Grande’s intervention sought to respond precisely to the demands of each environment, ensuring visual and functional continuity. The plant component thus appears integrated into the hotel experience, contributing to more balanced, comfortable spaces that are consistent with its identity.

“This was a project that required a very rigorous reading of the conditions of each area. We sought to select species and solutions that responded to the technical requirements of the spaces, ensuring their adaptation and fit within the whole. The goal was always to enhance the environment without overloading it, contributing to more balanced and comfortable spaces,” says Vera Quintas, from the Green Space Design and Construction Department of Horto do Campo Grande.
