Umbrella Plants are evergreen tropical shrubs with vigorous growth that easily reach the size of a tree. They’re loved for their elegance and leaves divided into 8 leaflets that, besides being glossy and resilient, resemble the shape of an umbrella. They’re undemanding, easy to care for, and belong to the group of plants capable of helping purify indoor air, having the ability to filter toxins in the small layer of air around them. It has a compact appearance and grows vertically, making it an excellent choice to add a tropical touch to that corner at home. In some cultures, especially where it originates from, it’s associated with good luck and prosperity, which makes the Schefflera a very popular plant and always a great choice to give as a gift, whatever the celebration. This Schefflera arboricola “Shrub” variety is the base species, and compared to the ‘Gold Capella’ variety, it will tolerate areas with less light better, will have more vigorous growth, will be more robust, requiring less care, more resistant to potential diseases, but won’t display as many bicolour leaves (yellow and green).

CUIDADOS
Light: Enjoys plenty of indirect/filtered light, although it tolerates environments with less natural light. Does not tolerate direct sun exposure. A tip: to maintain the plant’s compact shape, rotate it from time to time so it gets light from various angles, growing evenly.
Temperature: Being tropical climate plants, Umbrella Plants prefer mild temperatures and don’t like the cold. That’s why, in our climate, we should keep them indoors. But watch out for cooling/heating systems – like all plants, they won’t do well with these types of devices nearby.
Watering: Let the soil dry between waterings. Doesn’t appreciate having moist soil for long and is sensitive to waterlogging, so you shouldn’t have a saucer with standing water and must pay attention to decorative pots without drainage (where water can stagnate unnoticed). Regular leaf cleaning is recommended to prevent dust accumulation. Since it’s dense and the leaves are relatively small, making it not an easy task to clean them one by one, you can take the plant to a shower/bathtub base (or to the garden/terrace) and give it a shower, cleaning the leaves and watering it all at once.
Fertilisation: Use a fertiliser during the growing period (spring-summer), suitable for green/indoor plants, and follow the instructions on the label.
Pruning: Only to keep the plant healthy. Remove dry branches and/or weak leaves.
Not pet-friendly: This plant is toxic to pets.
Fun fact: The number of leaves on each branch is the basis for its common name in English: in the United States it’s known as “Octopus Tree”, since eight leaves are common and that’s the number of legs an octopus has!
