CUIDADOS
Light: Thrives in full sun or partial shade. More sun encourages sweeter and more abundant fruit.
Temperature: Withstands temperatures down to –15 °C or even –30 °C in some varieties; ideal for cold climates with distinct winters. It is sensitive to late frosts during flowering.
Watering: Red currants like moist but well-drained soil. Tolerates some drought, but in dry climates or intense summer heat, regular watering is recommended.
Humidity: Prefers environments with good soil moisture. Avoid waterlogging, though the soil should remain slightly damp.
Fertilisation: Apply moderate nitrogen in spring; phosphorus and potassium in winter or autumn, and organic matter regularly to keep the plant productive.
Pruning: Prune annually in late winter to remove branches over three years old and encourage new fruiting shoots; light pruning in June/July to thin out side branches and improve production.
Life cycle: Perennial. In cold climates, it is deciduous and may behave as an annual, depending on the severity of the winter.
Soil: Prefers deep substrates/soils with a medium texture (sandy to sandy-loam), rich in organic matter, slightly acidic to neutral, and well-drained; can tolerate moderately calcareous soils.
Not Pet Friendly: Some parts of the plant (mainly ripe fruit in large quantities) may cause discomfort if ingested by animals or humans due to their acidic taste and seeds, though they are rarely toxic.
Curiosity: Red currants are valued in cooking for jams, jellies, syrups, and traditional sweets in Northern European countries, due to their high vitamin C and polyphenol content.
