Actinidia deliciosa is a vigorous woody climber, often grown on rigid structures, with stems that can reach 4 to 10m in length in traditional cultivation, though it remains more controlled in home gardens. The leaves are deciduous, large, oval-cordate, pubescent when young and glabrous later, with a lighter underside. Flowers are unisexual, white to cream turning yellowish, and fragrant; male and female plants are separate, with cross-pollination being essential for fruiting, usually carried out by bees or manual pollination. The fruit is an edible oval berry about 5 to 6cm long, with brownish skin covered in fine hairs, green or yellow-green pulp, and black
seeds.
Scientific name: Actinidia deliciosa
Common names: Kiwi, Kiwifruit
Family: Actinidiaceae
Origin: South China
Category: Outdoor fruiting climber
Climate: Temperate to subtropical
Approximate height: 60cm
Pot diameter/volume: 16cm/2L
Light: Should receive full sun, although partial shade is tolerated in hotter climates. This sun exposure is essential for good flowering and fruiting.
Temperature: Needs a period of winter chill to break dormancy and ensure effective fruiting; late frosts can damage emerging flowers and affect yield.
Watering: During active growth, it requires abundant and regular watering; the soil should remain moist but never waterlogged.
Humidity: Benefits from cool soils. Avoid prolonged periods of drought.
Fertilisation: In spring, apply a balanced fertiliser with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (e.g., NPK 10-10-10) along with organic matter. In early summer, repeat the application to encourage fruit growth.
Pruning: Important for shaping and productivity. Training pruning: in the first years, to structure the plant over the support. Winter pruning (fruiting): removes branches two or more years old and preserves young shoots (productive in the next flowering). Summer pruning (green): reduces excessive growth and opens the canopy to improve light and ventilation.
Life cycle: Perennial. Female plants bear fruit from the 3rd or 4th year after planting, reaching maximum production around 8-10 years.
Soil: Deep, fertile, well-drained, and light substrate, preferably sandy loam with high organic matter; ideal pH between 6.0 and 6.5 (slightly acidic).
Pet Friendly: Non-toxic fruiting plant, although excessive ingestion of seeds may cause digestive discomfort.
Fun fact: Portugal is among the world’s leading kiwi producers, with an average annual production of 20 to 25 thousand tonnes.
