Description:
Lantana montevidensis is a semi-shrubby, creeping plant, much appreciated
as ground cover or in hanging baskets due to its trailing
growth habit. It has small, oval leaves with a rough texture and a characteristic
aroma. Its small, tubular flowers are grouped in
globular inflorescences, with shades ranging from lilac to yellow. .
Flowering is prolonged, occurring from spring to autumn,
and is especially vigorous in places with good sun exposure. Its fruits, although discreet,
are toxic to humans and animals.
Care:
Light: Prefers locations with direct sunlight. It develops best
with at least 4 to 6 hours of sun per day. In partial shade, flowering
is less intense.
Temperature: Likes warm climates and is sensitive to intense cold.
It tolerates light frosts if the roots are protected,
but growth slows below 10°C.
Watering: Requires regular watering after planting. Once established, it is
quite tolerant of dry conditions. During the summer, it should be watered whenever
the soil is dry, avoiding waterlogging.
Humidity: Adapts to moderately dry soils, provided they are well drained.
Does not like constantly moist or waterlogged soils.
Fertilisation: Apply a balanced or phosphorus-rich fertiliser in early spring
and repeat every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season
to stimulate flowering.
Pruning: Can be pruned in late winter or after flowering periods
to control growth and promote a more compact and
flowering appearance. Removing dried flowers helps to prolong flowering.
Life cycle: Perennial in mild climates. In regions with harsh winters,
it may behave as an annual.
Substrate type: Light, well-drained soil with a good percentage of sand
or organic matter. Tolerates slightly alkaline soils.
Not Pet Friendly: The fruits and other parts of the plant are toxic if ingested,
both to humans and pets.
Fun fact: Although less aggressive than other species of the same genus,
such as Lantana camara, Lantana montevidensis can become invasive
in favourable environments. Its flowers are attractive to butterflies and
bees, making it an excellent choice for pollinator gardens.
