Poet’s Jasmine - Jasminum polyanthum (24 cm pot)
A popular climber, thanks to its abundant, highly ornamental flowers—in shades from pink to white—and its intense fragrance. In late winter and early spring, it produces an abundance of reddish-pink flower buds, followed by fragrant, star-shaped white flowers with five petals, about 2 cm in diameter. At that time, it provides wonderful, lush coverage for walls, gates, fences, trellises, pergolas and other structures its stems can cling to, including balconies. It grows relatively fast and can reach 6 m in height (if grown in the ground; in a pot or planter, this kind of growth will be difficult). It doesn’t tolerate sub-zero temperatures well, so growing conditions should take that into account, and it needs plenty of direct sun to flower and develop healthily.

Light: Grow in full sun or partial shade (e.g., direct sun only in the morning). In very hot climates, it benefits from some protection during the hours of strongest sun in the hottest months of the year.
Temperature: Prefers mild temperatures. It can’t handle temperatures below 5°C.
Watering: Moderate. It needs more watering during the flowering season but is sensitive to waterlogging. If it’s in a pot/planter, watch out for standing water in the saucer, as it increases the risk of root rot.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser for outdoor plants during spring–summer to encourage growth/flowering.
Pruning: Needs annual clean-up pruning and training, which will keep the plant vigorous and floriferous.
Life cycle: Perennial.
Soil: Use a substrate for outdoor plants—rich in organic matter and with good drainage.
Pet Friendly: Considered a pet-safe plant according to the ASPCA. However, eating large amounts may cause digestive issues, so it’s recommended to keep an eye on more curious pets around the plant.
