Description:
Portulaca umbraticola is a low-growing succulent,
with thin stems and fleshy leaves that store water, giving it great
drought resistance. Its small, vibrant flowers open during the
day, especially around 11 a.m., and close at the end of the
afternoon or on cloudy days, a phenomenon known as “nyctinasty”.
Flower colours range from yellow, pink, orange and white, making it
an excellent choice for dry gardens, borders or hanging baskets. It’s a
low-maintenance plant with great visual impact.
Care
Light: Prefers spots with direct sun exposure. Grows best
with at least 4 to 6 hours of sun a day. In partial shade, flowering
is less intense.
Temperature: Likes warm climates and is sensitive to severe cold.
It tolerates light frosts if the roots are protected,
slows down below 10 °C.
Watering: Needs regular watering after planting. Once established, it’s
quite drought-tolerant. During summer, water whenever the soil
is dry, avoiding waterlogging.
Humidity: Adapts to moderately dry soils, as long as they’re well-drained.
Does not like constantly moist or waterlogged soils.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser or one rich in phosphorus at the
start of spring and repeat every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing
season to encourage flowering
Pruning: Can be pruned in late winter or after flowering
periods to control growth and promote a more compact,
flower-filled look. Removing dried flowers helps to prolong flowering.
Life cycle: Annual in temperate climates; perennial in warmer
regions.
Substrate type: Light, well-drained soil, with a good percentage of sand
or organic matter. Tolerates slightly alkaline soils.
Pet Friendly: Leaves and flowers are edible and non-toxic to
humans or pets.
Fun fact: Portulaca umbraticola is known for attracting
pollinators such as bees and butterflies, contributing to the biodiversity of the
garden. What’s more, it’s an edible plant, used in some
cultures as a leafy green in salads or stews.

After the order is shipped, the system sends an email to the address provided by the customer with the tracking number from CTT, our distribution partner, so you can track the order.
To ensure you receive the products in the best condition, only one delivery attempt is planned. We suggest you choose a day and time when someone will be home to receive the order, provide a contact phone number, and include any useful instructions in the notes.

For legal reasons, when plants leave our Garden Centers, their phytosanitary passport loses its validity, so they cannot be placed back into the commercial circuit. Therefore, we cannot exchange or accept returns for plants or flowers.
