Chamomile is a delicate, easy-to-grow aromatic plant—ideal for adding a natural, country feel to sunny balconies, terraces, and gardens. Its small white flowers with a yellow centre, like mini daisies, are highly decorative and appear abundantly during the flowering season. Low-maintenance, it adapts well to pots or garden beds, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. Traditionally grown for centuries in medicinal gardens and kitchen gardens across the Mediterranean region (so it’s well suited to our climate!), it’s now widely found around the world, both as an ornamental and for infusions and herbal remedies. It needs moderate watering and, once established, tolerates short periods of drier soil—making it a great choice if you want practical aromatic plants that are relatively water-wise. The fragrant flowers attract bees and other pollinators, helping create a livelier, more biodiverse garden. They can also be harvested and used fresh or dried to make chamomile infusions, loved for their mild flavour and traditionally associated with relaxation and wellbeing. A simple, useful plant full of charm—perfect for creating a little aromatic, nature-friendly corner at home!

CUIDADOS
Light: Grows best in full sun and flowers more abundantly in these conditions.
Temperature: Ideally 18–24 °C during active growth. It can withstand slightly lower temperatures (around 10 °C), but heavy frosts can damage the plant, so it should be protected during the colder months, especially if kept in pots or on balconies.
Watering: Likes moderate watering. Once established, it can tolerate some drought and prefers the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early spring and again in summer to encourage growth and flowering.
Pruning: Chamomile grows well on its own, keeping a rounded, compact shape, and doesn’t need frequent shaping. However, you can regularly remove faded flowers, as this extends flowering (great for looks and for infusions!). At the end of the flowering season, you can also cut the plant back close to the base to encourage new growth next season.
Soil: Light, sandy or sandy-loam substrates/soils, with a slightly alkaline pH, always well-drained. It tolerates low to moderately fertile soils. What it really can’t tolerate is waterlogging! Watch out for saucers with standing water or decorative pots without drainage holes, as they prevent excess water from draining and encourage root rot.
Pet Friendly: A pet-safe plant.
Fun fact: It belongs to the Asteraceae family—the same family as daisies, chrysanthemums, and sunflowers—known for composite “head” flowers that are often aromatic. It’s a great option if you want an aromatic garden that’s pet-safe, while also supporting biodiversity and pollinators.
