The Japanese Aralia is a shrubby plant with broad, glossy dark green leaves, offering an exotic and lush appearance. Low maintenance, it can be kept indoors or outdoors (in sheltered spots). Combined with other tropical-looking plants, it creates the perfect “Urban Jungle” look. It is also a very ornamental and elegant element in contemporary gardens. Indoors, it rarely exceeds 1m in height, flowers (outdoors this may happen in spring), or bears fruit (outdoors this may happen in autumn). Outdoors, it can reach up to 4m. Fatsias can filter toxins from the air around them, such as formaldehyde, toluene, and benzene, making them an excellent choice for offices and bedrooms.

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers plenty of indirect light. Can be placed outdoors in semi-shaded spots (direct sun only in the early morning; best kept in north-facing areas sheltered from harsh weather). Indoors, choose rooms with plenty of natural indirect/filtered light.
Temperature: Prefers mild to warm environments between 15-25ºC. Can withstand low temperatures down to 10ºC for short periods.
Watering: Let the substrate dry out slightly between waterings. If in doubt, don’t water—wait a few days and water then. Watch out for standing water in saucers or non-draining decorative pots. Excessive water can lead to root rot!
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soils/substrates enriched with organic matter.
Pruning: Remove old, damaged, or unwanted leaves in spring.
Pet Friendly: According to the ASPCA, it is safe for pets.
Fun Fact: In Japan, it is known as “Yatsude”, meaning “eight fingers”, referring to the lobes of its leaves.
