Lampranto (Lampranthus sp.) is a perennial succulent with extraordinary drought resistance and very low maintenance needs, especially appealing for Mediterranean gardens and landscaping projects where reducing water use is key.
Its fleshy leaves store water, allowing it to withstand long dry spells once established. When flowering season arrives, it becomes covered in numerous small daisy-like blooms in vivid colours ranging from pink, lilac, orange, yellow or red, opening in sunlight.
The combination of drought resistance, full sun and adaptability to poor, very free-draining soils makes Lampranto particularly well suited to Xero Gardens, Rock Gardens, gravel gardens, slopes and ground cover, as well as low-maintenance Mediterranean gardens. Different species within the genus are specifically recommended for rockeries, slopes and dry ground.
It’s also an excellent choice for hot, dry inland areas of Portugal, such as Alentejo, provided the soil has excellent drainage, and for coastal gardens, where sun, free-draining soils and seaside conditions suit it well. The RHS explicitly includes coastal gardens among the recommended uses for Lampranthus species.
Ideal for: Xero Gardens | Rock Gardens | Mediterranean Gardens | Gravel gardens | Coastal gardens | Slopes | Ground cover | Pots and planters
Scientific name: Lampranthus sp.
Common names: Lampranto, Daisy cactus, Midday flower
Family: Aizoaceae
Origin: Southern Africa – mainly South Africa; a genus native from Namibia to the Cape Provinces
Climate: Mediterranean to dry subtropical
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 15cm
Pot diameter: 12cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Needs full sun to develop compact growth and deliver abundant flowering. Particularly well suited to very sunny, exposed sites.
Temperature: Highly heat-tolerant and well suited to the hot, dry summers across much of Portugal. Tolerates some cold, but frost hardiness varies by species, so it should be protected from heavy or prolonged frosts. In mild-winter regions, especially in the Centre/South and along the coast, it can stay outdoors year-round.
Watering: Very low once established. Water moderately during the establishment period, then let the soil dry out well between waterings. In the ground, established plants may need little supplemental watering, depending on local conditions. In pots, it may need some watering during prolonged periods of heat and drought, always avoiding excess. Its high drought tolerance makes it especially appealing for low-water gardens.
Humidity: Prefers dry, airy environments. Excess humidity, especially with poorly draining soils, can encourage rot.
Soil/Substrate: Prefers very well-drained soils, including sandy, stony or relatively poor soils. A top choice for gravel gardens, rock gardens, slopes and areas where more water-demanding plants struggle. Does not tolerate waterlogging.
Fertilisation: Not very demanding. In the ground, it generally doesn’t need frequent feeding. In pots, a light feed can be applied in spring, avoiding excess that encourages too much leafy growth.
Pruning/Maintenance: Low maintenance. Remove dry or damaged parts and, if needed, lightly trim after flowering to keep a compact habit. Older or overly open plants may benefit from a light rejuvenation prune.
Flowering: Abundant and highly colourful, mainly in spring and early summer, though the exact timing varies by species and climate conditions. The flowers open in sunlight and are visited by pollinating insects.
Life cycle: Perennial.
Not Pet Friendly: There isn’t sufficiently specific veterinary data to generally classify Lampranthus sp. as Pet Friendly. As a precaution, prevent dogs or cats from ingesting the plant.
Fun fact: The name Lampranthus comes from the Greek words lampros, “bright”, and anthos, “flower”, referring to its intensely coloured blooms. Its ability to thrive with little water, lots of sun and free-draining soils makes this genus especially appealing for more sustainable, dry-climate-friendly gardening.
