The Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) is one of the most popular Bonsai species worldwide, especially prized for its extraordinary resilience, vigorous growth, and ease of cultivation. Native to China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, it belongs to the Ulmaceae family and is distinguished by its elegant branching, small dark green leaves, and decorative bark that, with age, acquires a characteristic exfoliating appearance.
It is a deciduous or semi-evergreen tree, depending on climatic conditions, showing an excellent ability to sprout after pruning and a great ease in developing a dense and harmonious canopy. These characteristics make it an excellent choice for both Bonsai beginners and more experienced growers.
Throughout the seasons, the Ulmus parvifolia offers an ever-interesting appearance: in spring it produces abundant new bright green foliage, during summer it maintains a compact and elegant canopy, and in autumn, it can acquire yellowish tones before partial or total leaf drop.

Light
The Ulmus parvifolia should preferably be grown outdoors year-round, where it benefits from the natural change of seasons. It appreciates very bright spots and several hours of direct sun per day, although during periods of intense heat it may benefit from some protection during the central hours of the day.
It tolerates cold well and requires the winter dormancy period to maintain healthy development. Rotate the Bonsai about 180° weekly to promote balanced growth.
Watering
Water thoroughly until water comes out of the pot’s drainage holes, evenly moistening the entire substrate. Watering should always be done from above, preferably using a fine-rose watering can specifically for Bonsai.
Before watering again, let the surface layer of the substrate dry slightly and check the moisture with your fingers. It appreciates a moderately moist substrate but does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging.
Never leave water standing in the pot saucer.
Regular misting of the foliage is not necessary. Only mist when applying foliar fertilizers, ensuring the leaves dry before nightfall.
Nutrition
Between February and November, regular fertilization with a specific Bonsai fertilizer is recommended, complemented with a biostimulant to promote balanced growth, good branching, and healthy foliage.
Pruning
The Ulmus parvifolia responds very well to pruning and sprouts easily from old wood. To maintain a compact canopy, new shoots should be pruned when they develop about 6 to 8 leaves, leaving only 2 to 3 leaves on each branch.
Structural pruning should preferably be carried out during the dormancy period.
Transplant
Repotting should be done between February and March, before budding begins, using a specific substrate for broadleaf Bonsai. Take the opportunity to do a moderate root prune, whenever needed.
Wiring
It can be wired almost year-round, although late winter and early spring are the most favorable times. Young branches are quite flexible; the wire should be checked regularly to avoid marks on the bark.
Fun Facts: The Ulmus parvifolia is one of the most used species in international Bonsai exhibitions thanks to its extraordinary ability to develop very fine branching and an extremely dense canopy. Over the years, the bark naturally becomes flaky, revealing different shades of grey, brown, green, and orange, giving the Bonsai an aged look highly prized by bonsaiists.
Despite often being called “Chinese Elm”, this species is distinguished from European elms by its smaller leaf size, greater disease resistance, and excellent adaptation to Bonsai cultivation.
